St George’s School was founded in February 1958 by Mrs. Mary Allen Acosta (1919-2013), a British citizen married to a Colombian engineer, Hernando Acosta.  From her days in England, Mrs Acosta was a teacher, a profession she continued to practice in Colombia.  Eventually she was to fulfill her dream of founding her own school, Saint George’s, into which she instilled her British principles. Mrs Acosta dedicated her life to the school until her death, aged 94.  Since 1985, her son, Jaime Acosta Allen has been Headmaster and has directed the School, continuing her great legacy.

  

Venues:
The first School site was a country house in what was the outskirts and is now the Toberín neighborhood of Bogotá. The School then moved to a house in calle 77 with carrera 7, where it had 60 students in kindergarten and transition, where it remained until 1967.
The School was a great success from its first day, and with its growth, it was necessary to find a new location. In the years, 1964 and 1965 the school acquired a piece of land in La Tuna (in the Suba district of Bogotá) where it has been ever since.

 

Awards:

In December 1978, Mrs. Acosta was awarded an MBE (Member of the British Empire) by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, for her services to Education and the English language.  In August 1982, the School was awarded the National ‘Camilo Torres Medal’ by the President of the Republic, for its work in Education.  In June 1993 and February 1998 Mrs. Acosta received the “Simon Bolivar Award” from the Ministry of Education, for distinguished services to the Nation; and the Council of Bogota, awarded the School ‘the Order of José Acevedo y Gomez’ in the category of ‘Gold Cross’ for services to the city, with a special mention to Mrs Acosta.  During the years 1981 to 1985, the School received ‘The Andrés Bello Certificate of Honour’ from the Ministry of Education, in recognition of the students who excelled in the ICFES state exams for entrance to university.  For more than fifty years, upright young people have been graduating from the School with the tools, necessary to meet the academic, occupational and social demands of the country and the world.  Over the years the School has consistently and consecutively been placed as one of the best schools in the country. This is not only due to the results in the state exams but is also reflected in the excellent academic achievements of these young people in both national and international universities; and above all in the way that many generations of students by their ethical behavior have contributed to the welfare of society.
