On 6th March,Saint George’s School participated in ‘Las Olimpiadas Colombianas de Ciencias’, (the Colombian Science Olympiad), an event organised by La Universidad Antonio Nariño. 36 students from 6th to 9th grade were chosen because of their academic excellence to represent the school.
The Olympiad, aimed at secondary school students, has two levels, the first (6th and 7th grades) and the higher (8th and 9th grades). These Olympiads further seek to deepen students’ interest in the sciences and nurture those with a special talent in this important field.
In a series of rounds, students tackled physics, biology and chemistry problems that tested their ability to draw on their scientific knowledge, experience and reasoning to solve them. In the first round the students were presented with a statement, context or results in the form of a multiple-choice test. Successful students then progressed to open-ended questions in the second round before the Final where they faced both theoretical and experimental problems.
The students with the best results will be preselected to participate in international events that will take place this year: The Junior American Science Olympiad and the Junior International Science Olympiad.
Good luck to the students who took part!
