Now a day’s science and investigation progress at great speed with all the information and resources available to the new generations. For this reason, all educational institutions have the responsibility to encourage and support science projects that promote an understanding and the well-being of human beings and bring about changes in the world; always bearing in mind, the care of the planet.

On 11^th May, the ‘El Tiempo newspaper in their section ‘Mi Zona’ published an article about the nine SGS students who were selected to take part in the XVII Student Research Symposium organised by the Gimnasio Campestre on the 8^th and 9^th May.

Nicolas Zerda and Maria Reales, two students from ninth grade, guided by their teachers Camila Zborovszky and Astrid Hurtatis worked for a year on a project that studied the behaviour of students at ‘exam time’. Nicolas wishes not only to live the experience but to involve himself with the scientific community and learn more about this subject.

How do these investigations come about?

They are conceived in the School Science Club, thanks to the interest and motivation of students from sixth to tenth grade. Throughout the school year, they experiment and learn by applying principles of scientific investigation that help them to develop solid foundations on which to become researchers.

Nicolas and Maria plan to continue doing research into different fields and more on the subject they worked on for several months.

For their part, The School encourages the students to participate in the National Science Olympiads organised by the Antonio Narino University.  These Olympiads further seek to deepen students’ interest in the sciences and nurture those with a special talent in this important field.

Tomas Bedoya in ninth grade and Manuela Trujillo in seventh grade are both participating in the Olympiads in different subjects. Manuela in Mathematics and Tomas in all three categories. They are being supported through all the rounds by their teacher Marina Larrahondo.

At present nine or our students have progressed to the Final Round, where they face theoretical and practical problems.

The students with the best results will be preselected to participate in international events: The Junior American Science Olympiad and the Junior International Science Olympiad that will take place later this year.
