54 reasons for smiling, is the SGS Prefect’s campaign for this school year. The value of smiling is the message they are trying to get across through posters and billboards and in assemblies.

There are times when we are fed up, irritated, sad, feeling physically ill or listless. Did you know that a smile can give you more pleasure than eating chocolate? Scientific studies show that smiling produces endorphins and natural painkillers. Smiling has a positive reaction, not only does it cheer you up but it has the same effect on other people; it is contagious!!

A study carried out by Harvard University showed that those who appear to be happy have more than a 25% chance of being so in reality. ‘When you smile you feel good; when others see you smiling, they smile; and when they smile, they feel good’ (Navarro, 2019).

Our task is to see that smiling spreads. The Prefects want to remind everyone of the 54 reasons for smiling. You will find these all over the School: in the restaurant, corridors, bathrooms, classrooms etc. ’Smile, on Friday there is chocolate ice-cream.’ ‘Smile, smiling is akin to music, a universal language.’ ‘Smile, there is always something you want to do.’ ‘Smile, someone loves you.’ Smile, every mouthful you eat for lunch, is organic.’ ‘Smile, you can set an example that will change things.’
