We celebrate ‘Language Day’ by honouring the memory of the great Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra and his major contribution to the enrichment of the Spanish language with his masterpiece ‘Don Quijote de la Mancha.’ The novel published in 1605, is considered among the greatest works of fiction ever written, placing Cervantes on a par with other illustrious writers such as Shakespeare, Dante and Homer. Cervantes died on 23^rd April 1616 in Madrid after a grave illness.

In 1995, Unesco designated 23^rd April as ‘World Book Day’ and ‘Copyright Day.’ It is estimated that eighty countries throughout the world celebrate this day, whilst in England and Ireland it is the 14^th March.

On the 23^rd we also celebrate St. George’s Day. St George is the patron saint of England who is known because of the myth in which he slays a dragon; representing the defence of the oppressed and the triumph of good over evil.

In Catalonia ‘Sant Jordi’s Day’ / World Book Day’ is celebrated by the exchange of books and roses with a loved one.
