17th October is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. It is important to remember that more than 800 million people live on less than $1.25 a day and lack food, shelter and clean water (according to the United Nations Development Programme). We must unite, children, families and communities to wipe out poverty.
Saint George’s School will carry out a number of activities to sensitize everyone to the struggle that so many people face on a daily basis. We want to make our contribution towards the needs and aspirations of those in need and not just a privileged few.
Wednesday 23rd October will be a day of reflexion. The staff and students from Second Primary up will have lunch according to the monetary distribution (income) of our country. There are 3 menus (upper, middle and lower class). Tokens will be randomly distributed to indicate the menu allocated to each one.
3% Upper Class Menu
55% Middle Class Menu
42% Lower Class/ Extreme Poverty Menu
The savings made on this day will be sent to the Cigarra Foundation. We hope by this symbolic gesture to begin to understand the inequalities existent in this country.
