Saint George’s School has a comprehensive Music Department that provides students with the artistic and cultural knowledge that enables them to appreciate and experience the different forms of musical expression and its relationship with other areas.
The school recognises that music education is a right that all school students have. It is offered as part of the general curriculum to help develop of cognitive, motor and emotional skills.
The curriculum identifies the three stages of development:
Awareness Stage: The students begin, through playful corporal experiences, to develop basic music skills such as singing (pre-chorus), the introduction to instrumental performance (violin, viola, cello, woodwinds, piano and guitar) and listening activities (basic training).
Foundation Stage: This includes pupils in primary from first to fourth grades and seeks to train them in their basic instrumental, conceptual and choral skills. In first grade, pupils choose from the following instruments which allows them to be in the Symphony Orchestra and Symphony Band:
- Violin, viola
- Cello
- Woodwind instruments, wooden recorder, flute, clarinet, saxophone.
- Brass: trumpet, trombone, flugelhorn and tuba.
- Choice of an alternative instrument is also offered: Piano, string instruments (guitar, electric bass, Andes mandolin, Llanos mandolin, etc.)
Advanced Stage: Includes students from fifth grade in primary to eleventh grade in secondary, who play the following instruments at an advanced level:
- Symphonic instruments: violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, flugelhorn and tuba.
- Choir
- Popular music ensembles.
Music history classes: All students receive this class, which teaches them to identify and appreciate the contextual influences that affect the way that music has been created and performed in different times and cultures.
EXTRACURRICULAR MUSIC:
Additionally, extracurricular music activities are offered to all students who require them, or who demonstrate high levels of performance.
- In preschool: Orchestra, beginner violins, beginner cello, beginner flute. first Grade: Flute, pre-chorus, singing, cello, violins and guitars.
- In primary: Pre-symphonic orchestra, choir, tropical orchestra, cello orchestra, pre string orchestra, string orchestra, guitar orchestra, and marching band.
- In secondary: Choir, Scottish bagpipes, orchestra of guitars, group of string instruments, symphony orchestra, tropical orchestra and symphony band.
FESTIVALS AND ACTIVITIES:
Students throughout the school are constantly exposed to formative musical experiences, such as:
- Music Festivals
- House competitions
- Christmas Concert and Solidarity Music Concert
- Participation in Mass and flag -raising assemblies
- Talent Contests
- Cover’s Festival.
