On the 14th and 15th of March, for the third year running, a Conference of Parties (COP) took place in Bogotá in the Universidad de la Sabana. Its aim is to involve the youth in the care of the environment.
The conference is organised annually by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to assess the progress in dealing with the effects of climate change; to discuss the Kyoto Protocol; and to look for ways of reducing the effects of greenhouse gas emissions. COP in MyCity is a youth led project to make the general public aware of this conference whilst at the same time promoting education and action to deal with the adverse effects of climate change locally.
In 2015 the students of Saint George’s School with the support of CLIC (The Latin American and Caribbean Youth Network on Climate Change) brought COP to Bogotá. Three years later it is still a major event in fostering awareness.
After two days of discussions, a resolution was drawn up to be sent to the United Nations. This will be presented during the COP24 and COY 14 (Conference of Youth) gatherings, as one of the numerous proposals of the youth in the face of world wide climate change.
We congratulate all the students from SGS who took part and their teacher Marina Larrahondo, as well as Ana Mercedes Acosta our Environmental Monitor.
