That our children should eat well is important not only for parents but for everyone involved. Instilling good eating habits is a daily practice in Saint George’s School as recognised by the Espectador newspaper. In their article, the School Food Service was not only praised but sighted as an example to be followed.
It is well known that eating well has a positive influence on health, growth and learning as well as preventing cardiovascular diseases, excess weight and diabetes. The World Health Organization has set alarm bells ringing due to the worrying increase of these disorders in childhood. They have made an appeal to implement strategies in schools that will promote a healthier life style.
In November last year, the Ministry of Health carried out a National Survey of School Aged Children in 1189 schools in 249 towns and villages in Colombia. The results showed: 74% of children consume sugary drinks once or more times a day; 82% eat packets of fried food almost daily; nine out of ten children do not eat the amount of fruit and vegetables recommended by the World Health Organization. Monsalve, Maria (8th December 2018).
Trials will be carried out in three Colombian cities, Bogotá, Cali and Medellin, where from an early age, children will be taught to lead a healthy life style to prevent obesity and the onset of these preventable diseases……
For more than thirty years, this has been the objective of The Food Service in the School, headed by the nutritionist, Mónica Cortés. There are organic orchards where 70% of the 18 vegetables consumed are grown and a lot of the food provided is made in school; for example: teas and juices that have no added sugar or artificial colouring, cakes, pasties, brownies and ice-cream.
The health and well- being of our students will always be our priority and to this end, we work tirelessly to provide the best for them.
